The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art medical training facility that incorporates Instruction and assessment of medical students, residents, and other clinicians (aka learners). The main goal of the Simulation Center is to improve safety within patient care. Current and future health care professionals "practice on plastic" honing their skills, refining advanced techniques and learning valuable social interactive tools for delivering important news to patients. This translational research becomes vital for creating the gold-standard in patient safety and medical teaching.
There are three different roles an individual may have as part of the job. An individual may do more than one role.
Standardized Patient (SP)
Standardized portrayal of the emotional and physical aspects of real patients or patient family members, for the instruction and assessment of clinical learners.
Accurate evaluation of learners.
Delivery of written and/or verbal feedback.
Genitourinary Teaching Associate (GTA)
Females: Utilization of your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing a routine female breast and pelvic examination. Instruct learners in physician/patient communications.
Males: Utilization of your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing a routine male genital and rectal examination. Instruct learners in physician/patient communications.
Physical Examination Teaching Associate (PETA)
Utilization of your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing some or all of the following examinations; Neurological, Abdominal, Heck & Neck, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Musculoskeletal.
Evaluate learners skills to perform these examinations.
High School Diploma or GED required. Experience as a standardized patient, a health professional, an instructor, or an actor preferred. Communicate articulately. Provide constructive feedback. Observe and remember learners' behavior for accurately evaluating their competencies. Possess interpersonal skills for working with clinical learners. If an SP, must be able to portray real patients. Complete checklists on a computer. If a GTA or a PETA, must be comfortable with discussing and demonstrating her/his own anatomy with others. GTA females must have uterus, breast and ovaries intact. Breast implants are acceptable, as are variant anatomical presentations. GTA males must have must have reproductive organs and rectum intact.
Working Conditions: Possible exposure to communicable diseases, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
